Centre-back speaking at his first media conference

Sam Beukema spoke of his pride at joining Napoli during his press unveiling in Dimaro.

“Napoli are a big club who can challenge for the title and in Europe,” the centre-back began. “I'm so proud to be at this club and to be able to work with Antonio Conte.”

“Napoli had an amazing season last year and I'm thrilled to be able to play for the Italian champions. I'm here to do my bit for the team. I have some Champions League experience of my own and I hope to be able to play my part in this squad of top players.

“When Napoli got in touch, I immediately felt the desire to come to this successful club in a very passionate city. I couldn't wait start this new adventure.”

Former Dutch defender Ruud Krol, an icon among Napoli fans, has lavished praise on his fellow countryman – and Beukema took the opportunity to return the compliment.

“It's an honour for me to be the second Dutch defender to play for Napoli. Krol was a Netherlands legend and I'm very happy to be his compatriot.

“Conte is a coach who works us really hard and demands 100%. That makes the difference. I like training hard because it's the mentality we need to get into peak condition. The boss gives you great discipline, as you can see from the excellent results the team obtained last year.

“I'm an aggressive defender but you have to be able to adapt your game to all situations and I'm sure that over time I can improve a lot.”
