Ahead of Napoli's Serie A opener away to Sassuolo on Saturday, Antonio Conte has stressed that just because his team won the title last year doesn't automatically mean they are favourites to be champions again this term.
Speaking at a press conference the day before the new season kicks off, the coach made it clear that retaining the title would be a tall order indeed and require a humble, united team – like last year.
He began by discussing the impact of Romelu Lukaku's injury.
“Romelu is undoubtedly an important player and he was key for us last season but these things can happen in football and we have to move on and find solutions for whatever difficulties arise. That's what we did last year and what we'll have to do this year too. We're looking forward and working to bring out the quality of our squad.
“It's difficult to win back-to-back titles and it's never been done at Napoli before. We know how tough it's going to be and that must be clear to everyone connected with the club. We realise there are lots of teams equipped to win the title but I also know I have group of lads here who are determined to improve day by day. We must let our football do the talking and show what we can do on the pitch.
“We can play different tactical systems, as we did last season. The main thing is having options that don't feel unnatural to the players and making sure you always get the right balance right.
What sort of game are you expecting in Reggio Emilia and what sort of season will it be for Napoli?
“As I've said, we need to keep our heads down and work hard. There's no point making bold statements. If there's pressure, it must be positive. The reigning champions are considered favourites by default but we've seen before that having the Scudetto on your chest is not enough. We need less talk and more action. You have to understand that if you win, you win together, and if you lose, you lose together. We must be united at all times.”
