Rudi Garcia could only state the obvious and point to his side's profligacy as they slipped to their first defeat of the season at home to Lazio.
“We should have gone in leading at half time,” the coach rued in the wake of the 2-1 defeat. “We spent the entire half camped in their area but couldn't finish off any of the moves we put together. We had 22 shots on goal – that statistic says a lot.
“Lazio were more energetic after the break and came out more, but we should have stifled their build-up play better and been more alert. When you can't win, you have to make sure you at least don't lose. That's something we need to learn because we left ourselves too exposed at the back.
“We knew Lazio would sit back and wait for the space to open up. As I said, we needed to exploit our first-half superiority better.
“We must improve by being more aggressive and taking fewer risks because we left ourselves too open today. A draw would have been a fairer result but Lazio weren't undeserving.
“We'll take the defeat on the chin and focus on recovering 100% ahead of our next games. We have a marathon to run after the break with Serie A and the Champions League and we must be ready. Now are thoughts are on winning the next game.”
