Pierluigi Gollini has spoken of his joy at winning his first league title with Napoli.
The Azzurri keeper, who joined the club in the January, was speaking to Radio Kiss Kiss on Friday.
“Winning the Scudetto is reward for all the sacrifices you make as a child to become a professional footballer,” the 28-year-old began. “And winning it with Napoli is unique. It feels very special.
“The team, the city, the club and everyone connected with Napoli deserve this success. The celebrations on Sunday were amazing – an unforgettable day that's impossible to describe. I think with time I'll realise what a wonderful occasion it was to experience the Fiorentina game with such a joyous backdrop.”
How did you feel at the final whistle in Udine?
“When I think back to that match, I see the images of us on the bench a few minutes from the end. We were almost on the pitch just waiting to explode with joy. I was lifted up by some of the fans and it was an incredible feeling.”
How have you settled into the dressing room since joining in January?
"When you join mid-season you have to be good at fitting in but the team also needs to be open to welcoming you in. We have a splendid team who made me feel like I've always been here.”
You started games against your former clubs Atalanta and Fiorentina – another sign it was destiny.
"I was a bit tense against Atalanta because it was my first game for Napoli and because I had some great seasons in Bergamo. Against Fiorentina I was calmer. There was a party atmosphere and my thoughts were more on the Scudetto than the unhappy time I spent in Florence.”
What sort of relationship do you have with Luciano Spalletti?
"The boss is a legend. I have a lot of time and respect for him– first and foremost as a man. He's one of those coaches who know how to lead a group while upholding strong morals. It's been a pleasure to have met him.”
Gollini champion of Italy – how does that sound?
"It's something I dreamt of I don't know how many times as a kid! Now it's real and I'm trying to enjoy every day of it but I know this is s a triumph that will always remain in my memory.”
