Genoa v Napoli preview

Previous meetings

There have been 61 competitive meetings between the two teams at the Marassi. The record stands at 21 Genoa wins (the last being a 2-1 triumph in the 2020/21 Serie A season), 21 draws (the last being a 2-2 tie in 2023/24) and 19 Napoli victories (the last being a 3-2 thriller in 2025/26).

In the last eight encounters in Genoa, both teams have managed to get on the scoresheet. The Rossoblu have netted 12 goals, while the Azzurri have scored 17.

Napoli head into the match on the back of five consecutive wins at the Marassi, four of which ended 2-1. The only exception was last season, when the team then led by Antonio Conte won 3-2.

This marks the fifth time Genoa and Napoli have faced each other on the opening day of a Serie A season. There were draws at the Marassi in 1958/59 (3-3) and 1954/55 (1-1), while Napoli won in 1957/58 (4-0 in Naples) and 2014/15 (2-1 in Genoa).

Match analysis

Genoa have failed to win the last four of their Serie A openers. The last time they did get all three points was in the 2020/21 season, when they thrashed Crotone 4-1. Since that feat they’ve managed two draws and two losses.

Genoa recently qualified for the Coppa Italia round of 32 following a 4-1 home victory over Ascoli. Alessandro Marcandalli, Tommaso Baldanzi, Lorenzo Colombo and Elias Havel all got on the scoresheet that day.

Lorenzo Colombo was one of eight players to feature in every match of the 2025/26 Serie A season, alongside Mile Svilar (Roma), Michel Adopo and Elia Caprile (Cagliari), Jean Butez and Anastasios Douvikas (Como), Armand Lauriente (Sassuolo) and Wladimiro Falcone (Lecce).

Genoa have taken part in 23 of the last 24 Serie A seasons, with their only one in Serie B back in 2022/23. This is the best run in the club’s history.

Saturday evening’s encounter marks the fourth competitive meeting between Daniele De Rossi and Max Allegri. In their three previous encounters, the Napoli coach picked up one win and two draws.

Max Allegri is one of the current Serie A coaches managing a club where they previously played. The others are Alberto Aquilani (Sassuolo), Fabio Pisacane (Cagliari), Cesc Fabregas (Como), Cristian Chivu (Inter) and Ignazio Abate (Torino).

Only Nico Paz (121) and Nikola Krstovic (98) took more shots than Scott McTominay (97) over the course of the 2025/26 season.
