Romelu Lukaku scored with the final kick of the game to secure three points in dramatic fashion at the Stadio Bentegodi on Saturday evening.

The striker came off the bench with the game tied at 1-1 and turned home from close range in the fifth minute of stoppage time for his first goal of the season.

Rasmus Hojlund had given Napoli the lead with a header in the second minute but the hosts then levelled through Jean-Daniel Akpa Apro's finish on the hour mark.

Antonio Conte touched on the team's difficulties and his joy for Lukaku in his post-match analysis.

“I want to thank these players for everything they're doing. This season will remain long in the memory, with everything we're going through and the way we're dealing with all the obstacles. This year is helping me to grow as a person too.

“Now we have to try and earn a place in the Champions League so that we can build for next season. We're still standing despite everything and we want to do our very best until the end of the season.”

“I'm happy for Romelu because he's found it really hard the last few months. He so desperately wants to help me and his team-mates. He scored an important goal tonight – for morale too.”

Lukaku himself opened his heart after netting the decisive goal – his first since returning from a long injury layoff.

“I'm happy for the team more than for myself. It's been a tough few months and it's affected me emotionally too.

“I owe so much to Napoli because before I came here last season lots of people had written me off as a footballer. This club helped rejuvenate me mentally.

“It was important to return to scoring ways today and see my team-mates happy. Now we must keep aiming high and try to get as many points as we can from the remaining games we have this season.”

Alongside Lukaku was Rasmus Hojlund, who was full of praise for his fellow striker.

“This is a massive victory to get us back on track again. It wasn't easy today with the way things went but we got the result in the end.”

“Romelu got the winner and it made us all happy. He's an incredible player and an important figure for us. The team hug was really nice. It's an honour to play alongside him. I hope to be able to score the goals he's scored in his career.”
