“First and foremost I’d like to apologise to our fans. They didn’t deserve what happened this evening, not least because of how wonderfully they supported us.” A thoroughly disappointed Walter Mazzarri spoke after his Napoli side were knocked out of the Coppa Italia by Frosinone.
“We all need to reflect after this heavy defeat. We made some clear mistakes for the goals we conceded. You can lose in football but you shouldn’t do so playing the way we did. We looked empty and directionless.
“We need to take a long look in the mirror and change our mentality right away. This defeat can serve as a lesson moving forward.
“To be honest, I think until we made the substitutions the team was playing well, a team made up of players who don’t see as much action. I thought we could go onto win the game by bringing on fresh faces including some players who are normally in the starting line-up. Instead our performance went downhill.
“Unfortunately I can’t provide a different analysis. I think it’s likely that when our better players came on the pitch we committed the sin of thinking we’d just go on and win it regardless.
“Now what matters is to get back to training, work hard, polish our errors and get back on track right away.”
