Celebrations for the 50th anniversary of NIAF, The National Italian American Foundation, came to a close in Washington over the weekend. The American organisation was founded in 1975 to promote Italian American culture and heritage, reinforcing the link between the United States and Italy.
Aurelio De Laurentiis, who met with many Italian American entrepreneurs and top Italian executives at the event, announced the winner of the NIAF/De Laurentiis Film Prizes. The prize, sponsored by Filmauro, saw five short films compete, all of which told Italian or Italian American stories shot by up-and-coming directors.
Out of the five short films, Adriana Serrato’s Pomodoro came out on top. This 15-minute short film tells the story of how, one afternoon, while dealing with a granddaughter who only eats pasta and ketchup, an Italian nonno begins to cook lots of dishes to introduce the young girl to authentic Italian food and the tomato in all its simplicity.
De Laurentiis is part of NIAF’s Board of Directors, which includes some of the most prominent executives in the United States and Italy.
