Besides claiming the Serie A top scorer award in 2022/23, Victor Osimhen also became the first African player to bag 26 goals in a single Serie A campaign. The previous record was held by Samuel Eto’o (21 goals in 2010/11).
That tally also means Victor has now scored more total Serie A goals (50) than any other African, overtaking George Weah (46).
Osimhen is one of just four Napoli players to have scored 26 or more goals in a Serie A season, joining Edinson Cavani (26 in 2010/11 and 29 in 2012/13), Gonzalo Higuaín (36 in 2015/16) and Dries Mertens (28 in 2016/17).
In the season just ended the Nigerian netted the opening goal in more Italian top-flight fixtures than any other player (10).
Since 2000 only on three occasions has the team with the league's top scorer also won the Scudetto: Juventus with David Trezeguet in 2002, AC Milan with Andrij Shevchenko in 2004 and Inter with Zlatan Ibrahimovic in 2009. However, none of them scored as many as Osimhen's 26 this year.
