Giovanni Simeone was officially unveiled as a Napoli player in a press conference today. Here's some of what he had to say:
"I'm aware that this is Diego Maradona's turf and that other great Argentines have also played here. I'll give my all to do this club and city justice."
Do you feel ready to represent the grandeur of Napoli?
"I'd say so. I've always thrived under pressure. I've learnt so much during my time in Italy and I think that I've got the requisite experience to contribute something to this team. I've matured a lot and playing for Napoli is proof of what kind of a player I've become.
"I never cease to give less than my all on the pitch, fighting for my team and team-mates. In this regard playing for Napoli will be no different.
"I had so many offers, including from big clubs, but I was only focused on coming to Napoli. There's nowhere quite like Naples.
"My dad was overjoyed when he found out that I'd be going to Napoli. He sent me a message saying that all Argentines dream of representing the club that Maradona once played for. It was emotionally moving for me."
What have you made of the squad so far?
"It's crucial for me to get integrated into the group and understand our playing style. This team oozes quality. I can't wait to get training and it felt amazing to be welcomed by the Napoli fans yesterday."
Is having Victor Osimhen ahead of you in the pecking order an added pressure?
"I'm aware that we can do well with Victor or anyone else in the team. Like I said, I was desperate to come to Napoli, I knew what I was coming into and I'm really happy with my choice. Obviously I can't wait to get playing and I'm only focused on giving my all in training and focusing on bedding into the squad.
"I'm keen to open my goalscoring account for Napoli, but I'm aware that I need to be in the right place at the right time. I aim to be ready every time that I'm called upon."
Can you imagine what the atmosphere will be like at the Maradona for the Champions League?
"Since I was a kid I dreamed of playing in the Champions League. Doing so with Napoli makes it all the more special. I'm here to improve, hone my craft, and win things. This is my mentality and I want to show people what I'm all about.
"I opted to join Napoli because I'm aware that I can take a step up at this club. I love how passionate the fans are; every time I played here for the opposition it felt as though they'd eat you alive. It makes me shiver with anticipation thinking that this passion will now be on my side. I feel at home in Naples, it reminds me of Argentina and now I want to learn Neapolitan so that I can really become a part of this city."
