Match Preview | Focus on Torino v Napoli

Previous encounters

Torino and Napoli will face each other this Saturday afternoon at 18:00 CEST at the Stadio Olimpico Grande Torino. There have been 81 competitive matches played between the two teams in Turin, and the record stands at 31 wins for the Granata, 26 draws and 24 wins for the Azzurri. There hasn’t been a draw between the two sides since 8 October 2019, when the scoreline ended 0-0 in a Serie A match. In the five subsequent games Napoli have won four times and Torino once.

Torino have conceded 13 goals in their first six games of the 2025/26 Serie A season. Five of those goals have come in the final 15 minutes of the first half - no team has conceded more goals in this period. Before the 3-3 draw in Rome against Lazio, Torino hadn’t scored three goals in a Serie A match since 20 September 2024, in Verona, where they won 3-2. Napoli are one of the top three teams in the league in terms of points earned in the second half - five, level with Juventus and Roma. A third of Napoli's goals - four out of 12 - have been scored in the first 15 minutes of the second half. No team has scored more times in this period.

In the last five seasons - after six matchdays - only in the 2023/24 season were Napoli not top of the table. In 2021/22 they were leaders having not dropped a point, in 2022/23 they were level with AC Milan and Atalanta, and last season they were sitting pretty in first with 13 points. This will be the fifth meeting between Marco Baroni and Antonio Conte as coaches. In the four previous meetings Baroni has won twice and Conte has won once.

Marco Baroni actually featured for Napoli in the 1989/90 and 1990/91 seasons, winning the club's second Scudetto and scoring the decisive goal on 29 April 1990, in Napoli’s 1-0 win over Lazio 1-0, the final match of the season.

Match Analysis

Che Adams is one of two players in Serie A this season who has exclusively featured as a substitute. He has come off the bench of six occasions, just like Sassuolo’s Alieu Fadera. Alessandro Buongiorno used to play for Torino - he made 109 appearances and scored four goals in competitive matches for the club. Frank Anguissa, who has scored five goals this calendar year, ranks third among Napoli players with the most goals. Scott McTominay has ten, followed by Romelu Lukaku on eight.

Giovanni Simeone is one of the two most substituted players so far this season – he has left the field in six games out of six, just like Sassuolo’s Armand Lauriente. Of course, Cholito used to play for Napoli - he made 103 appearances and scored 14 goals in competitive matches between the 2022/23 and 2024/25 seasons. Saturday sees a clash between two of the top three top Scottish goalscorers in Serie A history. Che Adams is third in the rankings and scored his tenth goal before the international break, while Scott McTominay is second with 13. Lewis Ferguson leads the pack with 14 strikes.

TORINO TACTICAL ANALYSIS

MOBILITY - Baroni's Torino put in an intense and aggressive performance in the previous matchday against Lazio. The starting 3-5-2 formation, with Adrien Tameze moved into the back three, was highly mobile, shifting into a 5-3-2 or 5-4-1 when out of possession to deprive the Biancocelesti of some width as well as penetration down the middle. However, in possession Nikola Vlasic and Cyril Ngonge were free to roam across the entire frontline, taking advantage of the spaces left by Maurizio Sarri's midfielders. This was achieved through attacking work down the left flank with constant exchanges between Valentino Lazaro and Vlasic. On the right Marcus Pedersen was left in space and proved to be a key player in breaking through for Torino. Once Lazio took the lead the Granata aimed to achieve numerical superiority by focusing play through the flanks.

AGGRESSIVENESS - Against Udinese the Rossoneri made 15 tackles (nine of which were successful) and recovered possession 65 times.

COUNTER-ATTACKS - Both goals scored by Cancellieri came from situations involving winning the ball back and surprise attacks, taking advantage of the striker's runs behind his direct opponent, Lazaro, who was otherwise occupied in Torino’s attacking play. To put this into perspective, Lazio attempted 65 long passes in the match, compared to their average in Serie A this season of just over 55.

The match will be refereed by Matteo Marcenaro.
